Less than a week after publishing the preview renderings of its Frankfurt Motor Show-bound A2 Concept, Audi today issued the first (computer-enhanced) photos of its pure-electric hatchback that will inspire a production version scheduled to go on sale within the next two years.

The new study comes six years after Audi terminated the original A2, which was the first high-volume production, aluminum-bodied car. It’s conceptual successor does away with the costly aluminum build but adds an electric powertrain to the mix.

While details surrounding the production model remain scarce, it is believed that Audi will offer the A2 with both electric and conventional powerplants.

While 70mm taller than the current three-door A1 hatchback, the A2 Concept is 18mm shorter at 3,800mm (12.47 ft) long and 50mm narrower at 1,690mm (5.54 ft) wide.

Nevertheless, Audi says that the A2 offers “plenty of room for four people” thanks in part to the flat interior floorboard, the ultra-thin seats and the absence of a traditional dashboard and lower console.

Other highlights of the concept study include a dynamic light that runs below the edge of the window from the front to the rear of the car and which acts as side indicator emitting light impulses, while a similar light is also located in the cockpit area of the show car.
