Top 10 Most Expensive Cars In The World

For most people a $50,000 car is well out of reach, while others happily spend double or triple of that amount on a ride. However, even those enthusiasts might not be so keen to whip out their checkbooks when confronted with the price tag of these vehicles featured in a special list compiled by Forbes.

These are the most expensive cars in the world, usually bought by the kind of people who don’t even break a sweat amidst the worst economic crisis. Forbe’s list in not without its flaws as the publication added two vehicles (the Enzo’s successor and the upcoming Pagani Zonda C9) that have yet to be revealed, let alone be priced. Nevertheless, you can check out the complete list of exclusive toys for the real tycoons after the jump.

10. Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe – Price: $447,000

You can’t go wrong with a Rolls-Royce Phantom, but if you really want something special, than opting for the Drophead Coupe is a no brainer. Powered by the same 453-horsepower V12, the open top version with its optional teak deck made of 30 different pieces of fine-grain wood, is in a league of its own, just like the people who can afford it. Even so, it’s the least expensive car in the list.

9. Lamborghini Murcielago LP670-4 SuperVeloce – Price: $455,400

A very different beast compared to the Drophead Coupe, the Lamborghini LP670-4 SuperVeloce is the swan song of the Murcielago series. Boasting a 6.5-liter V12 engine, capable of 670 hp, the four-wheel drive Italian supercar can reach 60 mph (96 km/h) in less than 3.2 seconds. Owner of this beast not only have to be rich, but capable as well, especially if they’re going to specify the car with the six-speed manual transmission.

8. Ferrari SA Aperta – Price: $520,000 (estimated)

Showcased at this year’s Paris Auto Show, the SA Aperta (aperta means “open” in Italian) was Ferrari’s way of celebrating the 80th anniversary of Pininfarina. Based on the 599 GTO, the SA Aperta has a removable soft-top roof and features the same 670 hp V12 engine. With a 0-to-60 time of just 3.5 seconds, the sexiest 599 is quite a performer and a rare car, as only 80 will be built.

7. LeBlanc Mirabeau – Price: $728,000

The LeBlanc Mirabeau is a pureblooded Swiss racecar, which happens to be street-legal at the same time. Wealthy playboys aren’t going to be overwhelmed by luxury with this one, as leather and other comfort features cost extra. This machine is all about speed and handling, relying on a supercharged V8 for power, that delivers 700 hp and 850 Nm of torque.

6. SSC Ultimate Aero – Price: $750,000

Considered by many a Bugatti Veyron-killer, the SSC Aero Ultimate can reach a top speed of 273 mph (439 km/h), thanks to its 1,287 hp V8 engine. Unlike the LeBlanc Mirabeau, this beast comes with quite a long standard equipment list. Many body parts are made from carbon fiber, but the lightweight material has been also used in the cabin.

5. Ferrari F70 – Price: $870,000 [Estimated]

For some reason, the fifth place in Forbes’ list is taken by a car that may be anticipated but has yet to be introduced or announced; the successor to the Ferrari Enzo. Forbes names the car F70 and says it is expected in 2012 with an estimated price of $870,000 – we have no idea how they came up with this price. The vehicle shown in the picture is Ferrari’s Millechili concept.

4. Pagani Zonda C9 – Price: $1.3 million [Estimated]

The Pagani Zonda C9 may not be out yet, but it has been scooped and even teased by the company. Believed to feature a 700 hp engine from Merc’s AMG division that won’t be a derivative of the V12 used for the SL65 Black Series, the upcoming Pagani C9 will have gullwing doors and more rounded body panels. Only 40 units will be built, each featuring a high-tech carbon-titanium chassis, almost 4,000 new parts compared to the outgoing Zonda and specially developed Pirelli tires. Forbes estimates that the car will be priced at around $1.3 million.

3. Maybach Landaulet – Price: $1.405 million

Initially presented at the 2008 Detroit Motor Show, the Maybach Landaulet is based on the 62S and it has a soft top that offers rear passengers an unhindered feeling of space. Powered by a twin turbo V12 engine, the Landaulet is a luxury apartment on wheels, complete with refrigerator, folding tables and two champagne flutes in hand-polished 925 sterling silver.

2. Koenigsegg Agera – Price: $1.5 million (estimated)

With a body made out of carbon fiber and aluminum, the 910 hp Koenigsegg Agera can accelerate from standstill to 100 km/h (62 mph) in under 3.1 seconds. It’s a proper supercar and then some, as the Swedes claim it offers the most luggage space in this segment. Not the highest priority when buying a vehicle of this kind, but for one and a half million dollars, it’s a welcome plus.

1. Bugatti Veyron Super Sport – Price: $2.6 million

It’s hard to pinpoint the raison d’etre of the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport, given that the “stock” Veyron is also ridiculously fast reaching a top speed of 407 km/h (253 mph). True, the Super Sport did reach a Guinness World of Records-certified top speed of 431 km/h or 268 mph, however the car shipped to clients are restricted to 415 km/h (258 mph). So, you have to pay a hefty premium over the less capable Veyrons (the Bugatti 16.4 Grand Sport costs $1.86 million and the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 $1.59 million) for a mere 8 km/h (5 mph) increase in top speed . But in the rich man’s world, prestige is very important, and we’re quite sure that billionaires will happily fork out the dough for the 1,200 horsepower supercar.

The Bugatti Veyron EB 16.4 is a rear mid-engined grand touring car. The Super Sport version is the fastest road-legal car in the world, with a top speed of 431.07 km/h (267.85 mph). The original version has a top speed of 408.00 km/h (253.52 mph).

Designed and developed by the German Volkswagen Group and produced by Bugatti Automobiles SAS at their headquarters in Château St. Jean in Molsheim (Alsace, France), the Veyron’s chief designer was Hartmut Warkuss, and the exterior was designed by Jozef Kabaň of Volkswagen, with much of the engineering work being conducted under the guidance of former Peterbilt engineer and now Bugatti Engineering chief Wolfgang Schreiber.

The car is named after French racing driver Pierre Veyron, who won the 24 hours of Le Mans in 1939 while racing for the original Bugatti company. It was named Car of the Decade (2000–2009) by the BBC television programme Top Gear.

A number of special variants have been produced, including two targa tops.

The Veyron features an 8.0 litre W16 engine with sixteen cylinders in four banks of four, equivalent to two narrow-angle V8 engines mated in a W configuration. Each cylinder has four valves for a total of sixty four, but the narrow staggered eight configuration allows two overhead camshafts to drive two banks of cylinders so only four camshafts are needed. The engine is fed by four turbochargers and displaces 7,993 cubic centimetres (487.8 cu in), with a square 86 by 86 mm (3.4 by 3.4 in) bore and stroke.

The transmission is a dual-clutch direct-shift gearbox computer-controlled automatic with seven gear ratios, with magnesium paddles behind the steering wheel and a shift time of less than 150 milliseconds, by Ricardo of England rather than Borg-Warner, who designed the six speed DSG used in the mainstream Volkswagen Group marques. The Veyron can be driven in either semi- or fully-automatic mode. A replacement transmission for the Veyron costs just over $120,000. It also has permanent four wheel drive using the Haldex Traction system. It uses special Michelin PAX run flat tires, designed specifically to accommodate the Veyron’s top speed, which reportedly cost $25,000 US per set. The tires can be removed from the rims only in France, a service which reportedly costs $70,000. Curb weight is 2,034.8 kilograms (4,486 lb). This gives the car a power to weight ratio, according to Volkswagen Group’s 1,001 metric horsepower (736 kW; 987 bhp) figures, of 446.3 metric horsepower (328 kW; 440 bhp) per ton.

The car’s wheelbase is 2,710 mm (106.7 in). Overall length is 4,462 mm (175.7 in), width 1,998 mm (78.7 in) and height 1,204 mm (47.4 in).

The Bugatti Veyron has a total of ten radiators.

  • 3 heat exchangers for the air-to-liquid intercoolers.
  • 3 engine radiators.
  • 1 for the air conditioning system.
  • 1 transmission oil radiator.
  • 1 differential oil radiator.
  • 1 engine oil radiator.
It has a drag coefficient of 0.41 (normal condition) and 0.36 (after lowering to the ground), and a frontal area of 2.07 square metres (22.3 sq ft). This gives it a CdA value of 8.0 sq ft (0.74 m2).

According to Volkswagen Group and certified by TÜV Süddeutschland, the final production Veyron engine produces 1,001 metric horsepower (736 kW; 987 bhp) of motive power, and generates 1,250 newton metres (922 ft·lbf) of torque. The nominal figure has been stated by Bugatti officials to be conservative, with the real total being 1,020 metric horsepower (750 kW; 1,006 bhp) or more.

Bugatti Working On Veyron Replacement

Bugatti Working On Veyron Replacement
The Bugatti Veyron has managed to stay on top of its game over the years, even though it has constantly received threats from multiple carmakers. Now, it seems that a new generation of the speed-trading machine is preparing to come our way with a stunning level of performance, as Autoexpress reports.

It seems that Bugatti is working on a new incarnation of the Veyron, which will be significantly faster that the current hottest incarnation of the hypercar, the Super Sport.

The vehicle is likely to use the same 8.0 liter W16 engine and seven-speed double-clutch transmission, but both will be modified in order to offer a higher level of efficiency. The unit will offer at least the same output as the Super Sport (we’re talking about 1,200 hp and a peak torque of 1,500 Nm here), but the performance will be taken to a whole new level.

To be more precise, the 0 to 62 mph sprint time will drop below 2.5 seconds, while the top speed should exceed 270 mph (435 km/h). Yes, Bugatti will beat its own speed record, which has been set by the Super Sport and sits at 268 mph (431 km/h).

The performance increase will be achieved through a serious diet. Bugatti will use Lamborghini’s new all-carbon-fiber philosophy, but this will not be the only weight reduction pathway used to lighten the car. The vehicle will also come with lightweight alloy rims and thinner (yet stronger) glass.

The Veyron’s replacement is expected to show its face sometime in 2013.

Being one of the world’s most exclusive and expensive supercars, it’s not surprising that Bugatti offers Veyron buyers the chance to customize the 1,001HP-strong model to their exact specifications. To demonstrate the endless customization possibilities to its Asian clientele, Bugatti displayed a pair of special Veyrons at this week’s Auto Shanghai 2011.

First up is a bespoke version of the Veyron 16.4 Super Sport, which made its Asian debut at the show. The 1,200HP Super Sport presented in Shanghai wears black carbon-fiber bodywork with details such as the logos, alloy wheels, fuel filler cap and rear lid, finished in polished and anodized aluminum. Inside, the supercar is draped in two-tone “Snow Beige” and “Beluga Black” leathers and heaps of carbon-fiber trim. Bugatti said the specific Super Sport has already been sold to a customer in China.

The second model at Bugatti’s stand is a special edition of the Grand Sport made specifically for the Auto Shanghai 2011. The car’s bodywork is finished in a matte white with the same tone found on the roof’s prominent air intakes. In contrast, the vehicle‘s lower carbon fiber parts and alloy wheels are painted in a blue hue. The same color is found inside set off by white stitching on seats, steering wheel and gear lever and an aluminum console.

“This Grand Sport is an example of the versatile possibilities customers have when designing their unique Grand Sport in co-operation with the Bugatti team”, explained the President of Bugatti Wolfgang Dürheimer at the Auto Shanghai. “We will continue to expand the design possibilities for the Bugatti brand,” he added.

Bugatti has unveiled Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport L’Or Blanc (”White Gold”) in Berlin. This is a unique model featuring the finest porcelain on its body, as well as in its cabin.

“At first, it seems to be an unusual idea to use porcelain in a car, especially in the world’s fastest convertible,” comments Dr. Stefan Brungs, Director of Sales and Marketing at Bugatti Automobiles.

“But this is what Bugatti stands for: the realization of exceptional ideas whilst striving for the utmost in quality and aesthetics. This allows us to continue Ettore Bugatti’s heritage, who himself loved to experiment with new materials.”, he added.

Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport is powered by a 8 liter 16-cylinder quad-turbo engine with 1200hp at 6400 RPM and 1500Nm between 3000 and 5000RPM. The official top speed is 415 km/h and 0 to 100 km/h is just 2.5 seconds. The car made 431 km/h during a test.

The L’Or Blanc is priced at €1 650 000.

Bugatti Galibier

Bugatti Galibier
First look

From the inception of the firm in the days of Ettore Bugatti, to becoming a modern unit headed by the VW Group, Bugatti has never really lost its eccentricity or its uniqueness. And the Bugatti Galibier is as highly anticipated a model as the firm has ever launched. The new Bugatti flagship is called the Galibier for the time being, although rumors suggest that it might be released in the fall of 2012 under the moniker ‘Royale’. Bugatti President and VEO Wolfgang Durheimer has commented on the revised timeline of the scheduled release saying that the most powerful four-door luxury sedan ever to have hit the scene will most definitely be out in the showrooms same time next year.

The machine

Set to be launched in late 2012, the Galibier looks to hold the title of being the undisputed champion in the luxury sedan segment and it can very well be just that thanks to the W16 engine on it that outputs something in the neighborhood of 986 hp (735 kW/ 1,000 PS). Details on the exact specs of the new model are still a bit sketchy but the firm has revealed plans to create 1,000 to 1,500 units of the practical luxury sedan to kick off the franchise. The final chassis construction and dimensions for the Bugatti Galibier Super Sedan are expected to be decided this fall with a carbon monocoque or an aluminum space frame being the way that the hybrid finally goes.

What’s good?

The immensely exclusive and equally expensive Galibier is undoubtedly more practical than the company’s current crown jewel, the Veyron, and looks to get even more pace and horsepower on it that the flagship model. The model will surely house the same dual-clutch gearbox as the Veyron with an optional dual power system making it more attractive to metropolitan users. The optional hybrid power system should make the car definitely more attractive to the ridiculously rich who “summer” in the countryside and don’t want to lose the air quality at their expansive estates.

What’s not so good?

While the Veyron was produced in an extremely limited run spanning just 300 units, the more practical Galibier has already been allotted a 3,000 unit-run. What sours the deal slightly for customers, however, is the estimated price of $1.4 million that would put the luxury sedan well beyond the reach of anyone who is not a gazillionaire.

Price and availability

You would need to rob a bank for €1 million ($1.4 million) to be able to procure yourself one of these and even then we suggest you keep a neat sum aside in case the company decides to adjust the price for inflation by the time the vehicle is set to roll off of the production line next year.

The bottom line

Set to get the tag of being the world’s fastest sedan, the Galibier is a gem worth having if there ever was one in the four-door world of automotives. Not only does the new model offer unprecedented bragging rights to its owners, it also ups the ante for other players in the super-luxury, 1K+hp sedan segment.

“The rapid success of the Super Sport convinced us to increase the performance of the Bugatti roadster. Once again our engineers worked hard to demonstrate that Bugatti is able to constantly redefine the boundaries of what is technically feasible,” said Bugatti President Wolfgang Durheimer.

“We gave our all to transfer the achievements of the Super Sport over to the Grand Sport, thereby turning open-top driving itself into an extraordinary experience at high speed,” the executive explained.
